Subject: Item F on the Consent Calendar (Broadband Task Force)
Dear City Council Member,
Please remove this item from the consent calendar.
For the past eight months, a group, DavisGig, composed of community members and technical experts, have explored the feasibility of providing fiber to the home (FTTH) (as well as businesses and government), resulting in the provision of gigabit internet to every unit. This goes far beyond what the Yolo County Broadband initiative proposes. DavisGig had done a great deal of groundwork, and volunteer members of this group should be co-opted to work on the task force. The task force should be tasked with formally establishing the feasibility of FTTH, nail down cost estimates, hold public hearings, and return to the Council within six months with concrete proposals, which should include finance options, such as a bond, utility users tax and any other options. Hopefully, such a proposal could be on the November, 2016 ballot.

I know this could be better, but time is limited.
I hope that some folks can attend the meeting tonight, 7 p.m. should be good for public comment. Butif they do take this off the consent calendar, it could come up for discussion pretty late.
I will most likely not be at the meeting.

IMO, the first thought should be to
take the item off the consent calendar, followed by the
reasons to do that. They need to know that there has been a
group of community members and technical experts who have
already done much of the groundwork. Participants in
DavisGig should be co-opted to work with city staff as part
of a task force to establish the feasibility of FTTH, nail
down cost estimates, hold public hearings and return to the
council with a concrete proposal within six months.
Monolithic emails are not required...

Is this a
correct and effective email to send to council members?
^^^^^ During the city council's
consent calendar activities tonight, please advise City
Staff to consult with the Davis community group
DavisGig while putting together the
City’s task force on broadband. Thanks! ^^^^^
Is this effective and correct? Weigh
in and let me know. Thanks!
