DR. Mads Gilbert is the Medical Director, Clinic of Emergency Medicine, University Hospital of North Norway and a professor at the University of Tromso (UiT), the Arctic University of Norway. 

Dr. Gilbert was working at al-Shifa Hospital during Israel's assault on Gaza in the Summer of 2014 after which Israel banned him from re-entering the blockaded zone. His new book on the 2014 war, Night <http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/23/doctor-mads-gilbert-gaza-shifa-hospital-camera-kalashnikov>  in Gaza was released in June 2015 by Skyscraper Publications. He previously co-authored Eyes in Gaza with  his  colleague Erik Fosse, an account of their experiences at al-Shifa during Israel's deadly assault on Gaza during ‘Operation Cast Lead’ (December 2008 - January 2009). Dr. Gilbert has published several papers on Gaza inThe Lancet. He has done medical work in Gaza, Occupied Palestine, for the last 15 years, and is the only Western medical doctor who has worked clinically in Gaza's hospitals during the last four Israeli attacks on Gaza (2006, 2009, 2012 and 2014). 

Since the 1980s Dr. Gilbert has been heavily involved in medical solidarity work around the world, carrying out training programs and helping war wounded patients in Burma, Angola, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Lebanon, and elsewhere. He is a co-founder of the Norwegian Aid Committee (NORWAC). Gilbert was appointed a Commander of the Order of St Olav in 2013, in recognition of his international work and his services to emergency medicine in Norway.

The corporation profits from incarceration and deportation from the US and Palestine,  <http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/dec/22/g4s-convictions-deaths-employees-racial-overtones> to the UK,  <http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/feb/13/south-african-prisoners-sue-g4s-over-torture-claims> South Africa, and  <http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/23/manus-security-firm-g4s-responsible-for-february-violence-says-law-centre> Australia.” 

● G4S  <https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/resources/fact-sheets/3541-the-environmental-impact-of-israeli-settlements-on-the-occupied-palestinian-territories> contributes to environmental destruction through its complicity with Israel’s illegal military occupation and settlements.

Background: In 2010, G4S bought Wackenhut, the national company that was providing private security personnel on light rail trains and at stations.  In 2013,  <http://iportal.sacrt.com/WebApps/SRTDBM/MeetingDocs/Archives/RT%20Board%20of%20Directors%20-%20April%208,%202013%20-%20Agenda%20Item%2005.pdf> Sacramento Regional Transit entered into a 3-year $12+ million contract with G4S for these services4. That contract expires on June 30, 2016 unless the Regional Transit board extends it; two one-year extensions were provided for in the 2013 contract. The Regional Transit Board should announce soon that it is not going to extend the G4S contract so that a new request for proposal can be put out or other options considered.
