►Protest Thursday, August 1, 2013, 12noon: Stop Israel’s proposed eviction of 40,000+ indigenous Bedouin
Sidewalk on west side of State Capitol, 10th & L, Sacramento; FMI: dlmandel at
The Israeli Knesset approved the first reading of the infamous Prawer Plan – an unabashed land grab that would remove 40,000-plus Bedouin people from their ancestral homeland. This massive violation of human rights just got a big step closer to reality. This Thursday, August 1st, activists around the world have called for a "Day of Anger" to show opposition to the Prawer Plan.
It was inexcusable and criminal when European settlers in North America and forced indigenous people from their lands and livelihoods and concentrated them on reservations. Though the effects of those crimes remain, in the 21st century, we know better, right? Well, apparently the concept hasn't yet been absorbed for the Israeli government, which is about to finalize a law that would do essentially the same to at least 40,000 Palestinian Bedouin in the south of the country. Many of the affected people were forced once before, after the creation of the state, to move to where they are now; and most of them have lived ever since in so-called "unrecognized" villages, deprived of electricity, water, roads and other basic services.
