Agreed! But what does #5 mean ("Ours goes to 11")?

     Hi All

Even if this Comcast upgrade happens, it is still
 imperative we do
this muni fiber project for Davis

     1) Our town owns the muni network, its private to our
 town, we will
be able to send data between locations in town for
 little costs, and
without having to buy cable tv package :)

     2) This is just the monopoly coming in with more
 monopoly tactics,
prices and service. Havign an alternative is better
 for everyone
     for all the competition

reasons we are touting for our own network. Comcast
 would lower its
price, for fear  of losing biz to the muni network.

     3) Our project will be able to provide a community
 revenue stream,
     Comcast wont.

     4) We can't have big pipe private interconnects to
 UCD, DJUSD, or
     City for residences/business with comcast

     5) Ours goes up to 11.

     6) No one needs  to pay $300 per month for Internet
 access.

     Onward!

     Thanks

     RAN

Yes, and how much water will a sports park need?
And if it's a sports part not usable by every Davis
resident, this is the wrong way to go about paying for it.
Users should pay all the costs if it's exclusive to
 them.

  I agree with
what Steve and then Shneor wrote. I was mulling the
"Sports park" proposal, and it occurred to me
 that
more people would benefit from a gigabit fiber network than
from a number of playing fields. Economically and
educationally, there's much more for kids and local
businesses (even if soccer and baseball teams eat a lot of
oranges and chips, which my employer sells).

Seems to me the more serious issue is the
mayor's proposed utility users tax on the 2016 ballot.
 I
doubt that both that and a parcel tax couls pass. Maybe
 this
item could be rolled into the utility tax proposal. That
could also increase the payback time to 30-40 years.

   I'll

believe it when Comcast starts work on getting the
  permits.
Until then, it's FUD to scare
  off competition.
   As for pricing, I'd
  guess $300
   if there's no competition
  from a municipal offering.
   $75-$100 if
  there is.
   And, of course, with
  Comcast's
unrivaled (not in a good way)
  service.

   The

quetion is, what would it cost for gigabit service? Do
  you
have to subscribe to Comcast cable for
  this? Would there
   still be metering and
  different speeds for different
   providers?
Not to mention lousy customer service. So,

  maybe.

        Looks like Davis

        Sorry Arbuckle!

        Does anyone think
  that a municipal or community
   fiber

    owned network

would be appealing after this is available?
