The Internet Service Provider (ISP) told they would not see high-speed Internet access until 2020. Taking matters into their own hands, the cities of Independence and Monmouth decided to collaborate on a project to bring the latest technology to their communities. ...Read the article... A group of residents are tired of waiting for high quality Internet access and don't expect a national provider to bring it to them any time soon. People in Brinnon are considering a fixed wireless approach pioneered in the San Juan Islands, which is a few hours north. ...Read the article... As was previously reported on this list, we received several responses to the Broadband Feasibility Study RFP and are in the process of deciding whom to hire to conduct the study. The biggest take way from the BATF meeting held last night is that we confirmed that we would hold ?in person? interviews with the 2 ?finalist? consulting firms concerning their responses to the RFP. The interviews will be held during an ?extended?, (i.e. longer than usual) regular BATF meeting on 25 January 2017. The meeting is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM and will include the 2 interviews and some discussion time. The planned ending time is 9:00 PM, but don?t be surprised if it goes a bit longer. The location is still tbd, because we think we may need a bigger room than the one we usually use, next to the City Council meeting hall. The meeting, as is the case for all BATF meetings, is public and anyone may attend/observe. If you are thinking about attending, it would be nice if you could let me know ? just so we can get an estimate how a big a room we might need. But that is not a requirement to attend. There will also be a ?special? BATF meeting on Feb 1 at 6:30-8:30 pm (location tbd, but most probably in the ?regular? room) to discuss selection/action. The 2 firms are CCG Consulting/Finley Engineering and CTC Technology & Energy. I, (and the city of course), have copies of their RFP Proposals. I believe that they are a matter of public record. At the meeting last night we spent most of the time discussing the questions to be posed and the format of interviews. We had also received a recent example of each firms work conducting a similar study. One was for Boulder, CO and the other was for Idaho Falls, ID. We also spent some discussing those reports, as well as their RFP responses. feel free to email me any questions/concerns (either on or off list). cheers, jeff --- Jeff Mischkinsky jmischki at dcn.davis.ca.us +1 530-758-9850 From rob at omsoft.com Thu Jan 5 15:14:42 2017 From: rob at omsoft.com (Robert Nickerson) Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2017 15:14:42 -0800 Subject: [Davisgig] BATF meeting results jan 04, 2017 and schedule for rest of Jan/feb In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <3dbb2bed-9dff-2b1b-c38a-08038e684b36@omsoft.com> Hi Thanks Jeff ! Cord cutters. Wireless. Copper. Cellular and LTE 5. Cheaper and better fiber deployments, with quicker time to first cash flow. Fiber networks supplemented with super-fast point-to-point wireless links, gigabit copper or gigabit cable. New technologies have also allowed new network deployers to get into the act. That means new options for property owners, managers, residents, educators, health care, content providers and communities. It means new competition for established carriers - and they are reacting with great new ideas and services, too. *Apartment Broadband* Record numbers of dwelling units in apartment buildings -- over half a million a year -- have been coming onto the market for the past three years. That matches the pre-recession peak, but without the overheating caused by an excess of single-family homes. All sectors are surging -- student housing, senior living, apartments for millennials. And it's happening in cities and large towns nationwide. *The New Administration* There's lots of talk about what President Trump and the Republican Congress will do. Fulfill promises to industry? To rural areas? Restrict or redefine net neutrality? Override pole attachment restrictions? The Summit is ideally timed to get the best early look possible. And remember this: The Trump Organization is no stranger to broadband. It won our prestigious Cornerstone Award in 2008 as one of the first big fiber deployers in New York City. Technology costs are down, options are up, so 2017 looks like another banner year for broadband. American communications carriers passed more premises than ever before with fiber in 2016 - 4.1 million - and 2017 is already off to a great start. All MDU segments are strong - residential, student housing, senior living, hospitality - and our committee has begun assembling an incredible new program to help owners, managers, investors and permitting officials with what they need. We have new network technologies, new needs for cellular connections, and a new administration. We see more consolidation among the giants, but more new entrants as well. There's more willingness to service customers outside formal footprints. More carrier investment in content. Hear from these providers on what their plans are. Do it yourself! (https://muninetworks.org/content/byrons-conflicts-va-how-deep-do-they-go?utm_source=Community+Broadband+Networks+Newsletter+List&utm_campaign=3f04ad76b3-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_171bbbcade-3f04ad76b3-82753625) Conflicts of interest have been front and center in federal politics this election cycle, but there is another place where we see a grey cloud of impropriety: the Virginia General Assembly. More specifically, above the head of Republican Delegate Kathy Byron, who last week introduced HB 2108 (https://muninetworks.org/content/state-bills-block-munis-start-mo-va?utm_source=Community+Broadband+Networks+Newsletter+List&utm_campaign=3f04ad76b3-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_171bbbcade-3f04ad76b3-82753625) , the ?Broadband Deployment Act.? Policy Payola? We noticed Byron is inclined to accept sizable campaign donations from big cable and DSL corporate friends, but Phil Dampier?s excellent article on Stop the Cap! (http://stopthecap.com/2017/01/19/virginia-scammed-industry-ghostwritten-broadband-ban-bill/?utm_source=Community+Broadband+Networks+Newsletter+List&utm_campaign=3f04ad76b3-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_12_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_171bbbcade-3f04ad76b3-82753625) took a deeper look at her dubious connections. Tracing campaign dollars from state legislators who sponsor these bills back to companies like Verizon ($36,100 for Byron), Comcast ($3,000), AT&T ($9,250), and CenturyLink ($3,500) is no surprise. Finding similar connections to their state lobbying groups such as the Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association is also typical (a generous $15,000). For people like Dampier and us, it's kind of par for the course. ...Read the article... Local media outlets, especially in areas directly threatened by the bill, are alerting constituents about threats to improve local connectivity.
